Common Situations to Be Aware Of
Being informed is your best protection. Most travellers never encounter these — but it helps to know.
Fake Guides & Touts
Unofficial guides may approach you at monuments, train stations, and airports offering tours at very low prices. Always use licensed guides arranged through a registered agency.
Taxi & Auto-Rickshaw Overcharging
Some drivers quote inflated prices to tourists, especially near airports and tourist sites. Always agree on a price before boarding, or use app-based services like Ola or Uber.
Fake Booking Agents
Unofficial 'travel agents' near tourist sites may offer tours, train tickets, or accommodation at seemingly great prices. Many are fraudulent.
Unofficial Ticket Sellers
People near monument entrances may offer to sell tickets or skip queues. Always purchase tickets at official counters or through the Archaeological Survey of India website.
ATM & Payment Precautions
Use ATMs inside banks or hotels where possible. Cover your PIN when entering it. Be cautious of strangers offering to 'help' you at ATMs.
Shopping Scams
Some shops near tourist sites inflate prices significantly for tourists. Gem and carpet shops sometimes use high-pressure sales tactics.
