The Golden City of the Thar Desert
Jaisalmer
Golden Fort · Sam Sand Dunes · Khuri · Longewala
Jaisalmer is unlike any other city on earth. The entire old city is a fort — a UNESCO World Heritage Site where 3,000 people still live inside medieval sandstone walls. The golden-yellow Thar sandstone glows like burnished gold at sunset, giving the city its name. Beyond the fort, the Thar Desert stretches to the Pakistani border — a landscape of sand dunes, camels, and extraordinary silence. The Sam Sand Dunes are the most spectacular, best experienced on camelback at golden hour before an overnight stay at a luxury desert camp. Nearby Khuri offers a more authentic, quieter dune experience, and the Longewala War Memorial commemorates one of India's most heroic military stands.
Highlights
Things to Do
Jaisalmer Fort Walk
Wander the narrow lanes of the living fort — past Jain temples, the Raj Mahal palace, and rooftop cafés with views over the golden city.
Patwon Ki Haveli
Five interconnected mansions built by a wealthy merchant family, covered in extraordinarily detailed sandstone lattice carvings.
Sam Sand Dunes at Sunset
The most cinematic experience in Rajasthan — camel ride to the dunes, watch the sun sink into the desert, then dinner and folk music at camp.
Longewala War Memorial
Site of the legendary 1971 battle where 120 Indian soldiers held off a Pakistani armoured division. The tanks are still there.
